The Volvo XC90 is nearly ten years old, but an executive has confirmed the company is working on a redesigned model.

While no timeframe was given, Doug Speck – the CEO of Volvo North America – confirmed plans to “bring an all-new XC90 to the market.” This is critical as the crossover is a bread-and-butter model that has languished virtually untouched.

Swedish carmaker Volvo is expanding its lineup with the introduction of two new models, the top-end S80 Executive sedan and the sportier loooking V70 R-Design station wagon.

Starting with Volvo’s premium sedan model, a special badge on the C-pillar hints at the enhanced features inside, which include a leather wrapped instrument panel, ventilated soft leather seats with massage function, leather-covered door panels, an aluminum center console storage compartment and an analogue clock on the dashboard. The extra thick carpets and an optional fridge in the rear seat that comes with a set of Swedish crystal glasses round off the equipment upgrades.

According to Volvo CEO Stefan Jacoby (who previously led Volkswagen Group), the Swedish brand’s expansion plan does not include a new flagship sedan that will compete against the BMW 7-Series and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.

“It is not in our midterm or long-term strategy right now,” Jacoby told reporters at the Shanghai Motor Show, where it debut the Volvo Concept Universe. “That has been decided.”

Volvo is looking to gain a foothold in the fast-growing Chinese auto market, and the Swedish automaker is hoping to pique interest in the brand with a range-topping luxury sedan concept. The design aims to incorporate the simplicity of Scandinavian design while also trying to discern what the modern luxury car buyer really wants.

In one fell swoop, Volvo has unveiled the 2012 V70, XC70 and S80.

On the design front, the updated models feature redesigned headlights, restyled wheels, and new door mirrors with LED indicators.
