cadillac_converj_3.jpgGeneral Motors has reportedly given the green light to a production version of the company’s Cadillac Converj concept. The Converj – which shares its electric drive system with the upcoming Chevrolet Volt – debuted in concept form at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

According to The Detroit News, General Motors has given the production nod to the Cadillac Converj. Like the Chevrolet Volt, the Converj promises 40 miles of all electric propulsion, with a small gas engine onboard to extend overall range to a few hundred miles. The news was reportedly announced in a presentation to board members on November 2.

General Motors has released a new 60-second spot for its Cadillac brand called “Re-ignition”, which showcases the firm’s forthcoming models including the CTS Sport Wagon, the new 2010 SRX crossover and most importantly, at the final segment of the clip, the production version of the CTS Coupe that is due to arrive in U.S. showrooms the summer of 2010.

There are few more obvious symbols of the conspicuous consumption that characterized the late ’90s and early 21st century than the Cadillac Escalade, but almost overnight, flash and excess gave way to eco-conscious minimalism. What’s an Escalade to do?

How about strapping an electric motor to its big V8 in the name of saving resources?

We can’t blame General Motors for spreading its hybrid technology across its full-size SUV and pickup lineup. Previous experiences with GM’s big hybrids have left us generally impressed and, truth be told, we secretly enjoy the Escalade’s bling-bling lifestyle.

General Motors’ precarious financial situation has left several projects up in the air, including the company’s Cadillac Converj production plans. The Chevrolet Volt-based luxury coupe has been hanging in the balance since its January debut at the Detroit Auto Show, but GM’s remaining executive board is reportedly in favor of giving the Converj the production nod.
