A mid-size sedan has been a long time coming for the Buick brand, with General Motors confirming on Wednesday that the new model will wear the Regal badge. The new Regal – which will slot beneath the LaCrosse in the Buick lineup – was announced at GM’s Buick GMC dealer meeting.

2010-buick-lacrosse.jpgCBC News reported that GM will adopt the controversial name LaCrosse for its redesigned Buick this year, potentially saving millions in ad costs but risking fall-out in Quebec.

That’s because LaCrosse is slang in Quebec for pleasuring yourself

When GM first debuted the $40,000 sedan in North America in 2005, the company changed the name to the Buick Allure for the Canadian market after someone pointed out the name’s prurient connotation in French.

But with a redesigned model debuting this year, the ailing auto giant has adopted the LaCrosse name for Canada too.

General Motors is hard at work developing a new premium small car for its Buick division, with ambitions of rivaling BMW’s 1-Series and perhaps upping the ante a few notches while they’re at it. The automaker has released a handful of sketches depicting seven possible exterior designs for a vehicle it calls Avant.

General Motors is delaying the roll out of the 2010 Buick LaCrosse by a few weeks due to quality concerns. Mark LaNeve, GM’s vice president of U.S. sales, said that 300 to 400 cars were shipped in August and that further delivers are on hold until the company works out “quality issues.”

While LaNeve wouldn’t give any specifics he said that the problems ”were not serious but were enough to delay us three or four weeks while we made sure they were fixed so that our customers didn’t have any problems.”
