In order to make the Nano the world’s cheapest car – with a sticker price of about $2,500 – Tata Motors undoubtedly had to make quality sacrifices in almost every area of the tiny city car. However, some of those cuts have apparently come back to bite Tata as three Nano owners have reported electrical fires.
According to The Times of India, at least three Tata Nano owners have reported electrical fires. The fires appear to be the result of an electrical short in the car’s steering column. No injuries have been linked to the default, with all three cases occurring when the ignition switch was in the ‘off’ position.
Tata has already inspected two of the vehicles, with the third vehicle expected to be given the once over in the coming days. Tata has also inspected several other Nano models but has yet to announce an official recall.
“We do not believe that this is generic and we are not considering any recall. However, a pre-emptive check may be carried out on cars that are to be handed over or those that are with customers, purely as a precautionary measure,†a spokesman for Tata Motors told The Times of India.
While electrical fires are never good thing, the Nano’s cases are especially concerning as Tata plans to sell the Nano in other world markets. The Nano is expected to go on sale in Europe early next decade with a version likely earmarked for the U.S. market in the coming years.
