Attempting to follow in the success of other retro hatchbacks – such as the Fiat 500 – Citroen will produce a new-age version of its iconic 2CV, a new report finds. The new model will be largely based on the Revolte concept that made its world debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The production version of the new model – which will wear the DS2 nameplate – will be heavily influenced by its show car counterpart. Although some features will be toned down for the showroom floor, the production model is expected to retain the concept’s rear-hinged doors and 2CV-inspired shape.As the DS2 nameplate implies, the new model will be Citroen’s entry-level DS car. Citroen recently released the DS line — with the DS3 model — as an up-scale alternative to its standard cars.

The DS2 will share its underpinning with Citroen’s all-new C3 model, according to AutoExpress. The DS2 will be available with a range of three-cylinder gas engines, as well as Citroen’s 1.4L HDi diesel motor. Look for the DS2 to hit the European market in 2012.
